The MESoR Project

MESoR Welcome Message

MESoR is built on the experience gained in the projects SoDa, SWERA, and PV-GIS. The core activity is the creation of software, called a broker or middleware, that will ensure the connection and the unified access to sources of information. It will be a continuation of the work undertaken in SoDa but with a noticeable step forward. MESoR will exploit the efforts and the standards made by other communities, e.g., the geographical, meteorological and computer communities, to create a tool dedicated to solar resource knowledge. Compared to SoDa, this tool will be more flexible and easier to handle. Unlike SoDa, it will be based on OpenSource solutions, and thus will benefit from the experience of a very large community of users in different domains and will evolve accordingly without too many efforts as new versions are released by the developers community.

From results provided by WP 4 (survey of users requirements), a model of the information system will be realised. The Unified Modelling Language (UML) will be adopted (Armines, EC - DG JRC and UniPO). Experience of standardised grid technology (e.g. from the German funded project WISENT, UNIOL+DLR) will be taken into account.

Metadata should be defined to describe data and exploit them. We intend to use standards as much as possible and propose to serve as a test bed for the implementing rules of the INSPIRE initiative. Analyse the Implementing Rules. Apply them to the data sets analysed in WP 1.1 and others (e.g. Satel-Light, ESRA, SoDa, PVGIS and SWERA), taking into account the model of the information system, i.e., the diagrams of use cases, sequences and navigation. Evaluate the application through various criteria: difficulty, resources needed, time, etc. Feedback of this experience in geographical information for energy market to the INSPIRE Consolidation Team, including assessment of the cost and benefit of this solution, will be organised within WP 3 (Armines).

Based on the model and metadata, develop middleware infrastructure using Open Source software. A prototype of a Web service will be built (Armines). User interface and mapping capabilities will be key elements of the prototype (EC - DG JRC, UniPO). The prototype will offer a fast and easy access to resource products. It will be gauged by users in WP 4. Feedback from users will be taken into account to bring improvements. (Armines, EC - DG JRC and UniPO).

The project MESoR is suppoted as a Coordination Action by the European Commission under contract number 038665 within the 6th framework programme.
